PROJECTION WORK (I FEEL IT IN MY BODY - 2021)
I feel it in my body is a video art piece which incorporates elements of body projection, performance and sound art, designed for the digital space and intended to take the viewer on a journey through the fragmented reality of an individual affected by trauma.
Video clips in which the performer’s female body are distorted, transformed and warped through projection uncover darker emotional experiences including feelings of shame, fear and isolation are contrasted with those exploring more positive feelings of self care and realisation, hinting at a route to recovery.
This structure reflects trauma’s non-linear healing process and utilises techniques from trauma therapy such as anchoring (Rothschild, 2000) otherwise known as the safe space technique, in which an individual draws on their internal resources to recall with all five senses to create a safe space and pendulation (Levine, 2014) in which the therapist encourages the individual to go between exploring the trauma and grounding in the present moment in order to access and process their trauma safely.
The video automatically loops from the darkness at the beginning to the darkness at the end reminiscent of the way a human mind can repeatedly examine and re-examine the traumatic issues until a resolution is found.
