#SAYNOMORE (2020)

Living in times where the rate of domestic abuse and violence against women has increased in almost every country since the Coronavirus lockdown #SayNoMore is a work designed to address and highlight marginalised voices particularly those of women who are not able to safely speak up about these issues.
The artwork takes the form of silhouettes to resonate with those images that we are so familiar with seeing in the media: e.g. that of the anonymous female interviewee who wants to speak up about what she has experienced but if afraid to be seen because of any possible judgement or consequences. Differing from the well-known oppressive statement that women should be “seen and not heard”, these women are moving forward with their voices but are not quite all the way there yet..
The work invites the viewer to express themselves regarding this topic by submitting their interpretation of what the faceless, voiceless silhouette of the woman wants to say. All responses will be added anonymously to the scroll.
This work was originally exhibited in physical form at The Star and Shadow Cinema in Heaton in February 2020 and online at Ars Electronica 2020

Initially inspired by the many questions faced by a young person when leaving school, university or any form of education e.g. ‘When will I find a job? When will I get married and have kids? Will I be successful? Will I ever achieve my dreams? And the list goes on…
